My parents are trying to tell me to follow up on an application I submitted to an art store for a part time summer job. I think this is weird and pushy. They don’t even know my name, and I haven’t been called for an interview.

What do ya’ll think? Should I go and follow up on my application?

I would email or call. If it tells you anything, I’ve even had to do this for Big 4 accounting firms. Sometimes they just get busy.

Absolutely make ONE phone call. One call shows interest and initiative, and can spur some action on your application.

Any more than one call and you appear pushy and desperate.

Make sure you can talk to a live person, and be sure to ask for the hiring manager. Simply state that you had applied and you were curious if they needed any further info from you.

Keep it that simple.

They are 100% correct.

You taking the initiative to follow up shows them how interested you are, and makes them more likely to hire you. Always follow up before they do.

If you don't want the job then don't follow up. If you want it then you HAVE to follow up. If you really want a job then you can't sit around waiting for someone to offer you a job. You have to let them know you REALLY want to work. You're one in a million people who need a job.

I own a business and definitely look favorably upon people following up when they want a job. Don’t go crazy, but calling/emailing a few times should be the expectation
